When I entered grad school, I was still in that completely mixed
state of Philip Glass, John Zorn, Tom Waits, and various attacks
of pure pop frenzy: Prince, Madonna, and so on.
Then came the radio station here. Free jazz fled in the way of electronic music (a return to the Wax Trax mindset from 89, really), and finally I hit up against world music. Not, say, world music in the sense of hybrid western-indigenous material (usually a shitty overlay of western cheezy ass new age crap guitar with some native percussion loop, totally gutted of joyful synchopation and energy), but world music in the sense of the original material, what's really popular or historically interesting in a given area.
